Jungly Jadoogar 2: The magic of South Asian story-telling
14 & 15 April 2017

At a loose end on how to keep the bachas meaningfully entertained this Easter weekend? Luckily, there’s a fantastical adventure afoot in the mystical land of Kaukaaf!

Jungly Jadoogar, an immersive theatrical production for all the family plans to set imaginations alight with luminous fish, dancing robots, and a sorceress who – in typical sorceress fashion – has a penchant for meddling.

So take the little ones, and the not so little ones, and head over to the Muslim Lifestyle Show where the production will be taking place this Saturday and Sunday.

With two sell out performances last year, the show aims to entertain and educate in equal measure. We caught up with the writer and director of the production, and asked her about what drove her to write the Jungly Jadoogar series. She said: “Stories across the world have the same soul, just different context-specific names, places, character traits. We felt that there was a dearth of positive South Asian references in the UK for our youth and children to identify with.

And so the play is packed full of them – Princess Gulfaam and Prince Jalfrezi, brothers Gulloo and Bulloo, a spying grandmother called Dadi 007, and of course Fifi the fire-breathing dragon.

We particularly love that the play has a feminist focus. Not to give too much away, but we’re told that in Jungly Jadoogar, it’s the swashbuckling princess who does the rescuing. Mariam says: “We want to challenge all sorts of stereotypes, within the community as well as the British mainstream public, concerning South Asians”.

The third part of the series will showcase at the Southbank Centre’s Alchemy Festival as part of the Karachi Literature Festival. Watch this space for more on that later.
