The Coke Studios of the world need little introduction any more. But there’s a newer and slightly different kid on the block in Pakistan.
Nescafe Basement is also a live studio-recorded show, but its aim is to find and platform new underground talent. The show is in its fourth season – apparently producer and mentor Xulfi’s favourite so far. It’s a great format – NB brings together aspiring young artists (the latest season involved scouring universities) in the ‘jam room’ to collaborate on experimental reimaginings of the classics. Starting off as strangers, it’s through the jams that the musicians get to know each other, form friendships and make beautiful music!
Our absolute favourite from Season 4 so far is a young man called Zeeshan Ali and this brave and brilliant version of the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan classic ‘Tere Jeya Hor Disda’. Purists beware – this song is reinterpretation heaven.
