Sholay-Barbican

Kitne aadmi thhe…? Said Gabbar Singh in Sholay – the 1975 film that delivered line after unforgettable line, and counts as one of the great classics of Bollywood cinema. It’s showing at the Barbican as part of their What London Watches: Ten Films that Shook Our World series.

And quite right they are too. Sholay is a perfectly executed masala movie which took serious inspiration from the Hollywood western. It’s the story of great friendship, romance and family told through melodrama and superb action. It starred megastars Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Hema Malini – and the brilliant Amjad Khan as the bandit Gabbar Singh, whose iconic lines are still remembered and used today. Hear some of them in this clip!
