October is shaping to be such an exciting month! This Thursday sees the opening of an exhibition ‘Paintings from Pakistan’ by artist Daisy Perkins (also our beloved visual arts contributor). Daisy spent a month earlier this year living in Shergarh, a village in Punjab, drawing and painting everyday rural village life – as she says both “the mundane and the beautiful“. Of her time there, Daisy told us: “I experienced a Pakistan that was vastly different to my everyday life and that which is reported in the news. As an artist I found beauty in so many of these differences, while at the same time being struck by how fundamentally similar our lives are. I hope for the exhibition to be a testament to the people, culture and landscape that so welcomed and capitivated me.”
It gets special-er. In celebration of the spirit and colours of the Punjab, On Friday 28th, Daisy is hosting a private view of the exhibition, which will include a sumptuous, candlelit Punjabi feast by chef Saima Khan. Saima runs the private chef and catering company Hampstead Kitchen, and has cooked for the likes of Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates – all fans of her approach to sharing food. You’ll know her from the reams of press coverage she’s had lately – in The Times, and even the Daily Mail. If that’s enough, we can personally vouch for her delectable flavours and beautiful presentation. Of her support for the exhibition, Saima says: “When Daisy proposed the idea of combining art and food for a special private view, I jumped in straight away. We hope the evening should reflect the rich culture and tradition of Punjab captured in Daisy’s art and also through the rich spices via my food.”
All proceeds from the evening, and 10% of painting sales will go to the Daud Bandagi Development Trust which is working in Shergarh and the surrounding area. Places are seriously limited and you don’t want to miss what promises to be the loveliest evening. Book now!
The exhibition runs from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th October.
