It’s May and that means only one thing over at Funoon HQ – Festival Frenzy! And kicking off the Asia House Bagri Foundation Literature Festival TODAY is everyone’s favourite person Bake Off’s Nadiya, in conversation with Yasmin Alibhai Brown. This is the woman who recently had to apologise for talking about her husband’s a*** on daytime TV, who threatened to streak when she got into GBBO’s quarter finals, and whose facial expressions have launched a thousand memes and an entire Tumblr. She’s also responsible for the immortal words: “That went badly. Obviously”
Since winning last year’s Bake Off Nadiya has been seen as a symbol of multicultural Britain, as well as modern British Asian and Muslim identity – weighty labels that she carries with aplomb, however shyly. Given Nadiya’s huge fan following, the not so intimate chat will take place in a conference centre, but that’s unlikely to grey her humour, warmth and magnetism. We are promised discussion on issues of identity, integration and CAKES, with Patisserie Valerie on hand with a selection of the all-important last. Can’t think of a lovelier way of spending an early evening.
